International Labour and Environmental Standards application in Pakistan’s Small & Medium Enterprises (ILES)

The European Union funded project titled "International Labour and Environmental Standards [ILES] application in Pakistan’s Small & Medium Enterprises (ILES)" is being conducted by International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Wide Fund for Nature, Pakistan (WWF-P). Cleaner Production Institute is working as consultant to implement project activities in textile and tannery SMEs. It is a six year project (January 2017 – December 2021), with the overall objective to “Support the economic integration of Pakistan into the global and regional economy by increasing exports and competitiveness through improved compliance with labour and environmental standards”. The labour and environmental components of ILES project will be executed by ILO and WWF-Pakistan respectively.
The project will introduce a range of key Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) interventions including Cleaner Production, Improved Resource Efficiency (including water and energy), and Reduced Pollution (in terms of air, noise and solid waste). The project will also address the Decent Work and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) practices which will be implemented by ILO for improving their existing status to meet the international standards in targeted sector SME’s. Cleaner Production Institute is working with 75 textile and tannery SMEs to implement Smart Environmental Management Practices (SEMPs), for Water and Energy Efficiency, Safe Use and Management of Hazardous Chemicals, and Pollution Mitigation.

City-wide Partnership for Sustainable Water Use and Water Stewardship in SMEs in Lahore, Pakistan (WSP)

City-wide Partnership for Sustainable Water Use and Water Stewardship in SMEs in Lahore, Pakistan (WSP) was EU funded project under SWITCH Asia. WSP was executed by the World Wide Fund for Nature-Pakistan (WWF-P), World Wide Fund for Nature-United Kingdom (WWF-UK) and Cleaner Production Institute (CPI). The project focused towards the SMEs, with the overall objective as, “By the year 2025 water efficient production and consumption predominates as best practice in Pakistan’s major industrial cities as part of broad engagement of businesses in water management, contributing to improved environmental sustainability and poverty reduction within the context of sustainable development.”

CPI conducted following activities under WSP:

1. Conduct water audits in 35 SMEs of textile, paper, sugar and leather
2. Provide training to the industrial professionals on water auditing and water management
3. Facilitate industries to implement best Water Management Practices (BWMPs)
4. Prepare business cases of water management

Promotion of Energy Efficient Boilers in Punjab, Pakistan

The project “Promotion of Energy Efficient Boilers in Punjab, Pakistan” was under cooperation agreement between IFC and Cleaner Production Institute for the uptake of next generation cleaner production by the industry sector of Pakistan.

CPI conducted following activities under WSP:

1. Conduct screening of boilers to identify energy efficiency issues
2. Conduct in depth boiler assessment to identify energy efficiency issues and recommend energy efficiency solutions
3. Conduct training to the industrial professionals on boiler efficiency issues

Sustainable Cotton Production in Pakistan’s Cotton Ginning SMEs (SPRING)

Sustainable Cotton Production in Pakistan’s Cotton Ginning SMEs (SPRING) was European Union funded project under the umbrella of SWITCH Asia. This project was executed by WWF Pakistan and WWF UK. Cleaner Production Institute was the consultant for providing technical input in the project. This project worked in cotton ginning sector of Pakistan to promote energy and resource efficiency technologies and providing enabling environment for the SMEs in the areas of resource efficient technologies, financial institutes, policy makers and industrial associations.

CPI conducted following activities under the project:

1. Conduct environmental and energy audits in 60 ginning mills of Pakistan
2. Project management activities
3. Prepare business cases of resource efficiency for ginning mills
4. Contributor in drafting Better Ginning Practices (BGPs) manual
